Putz Houses Are My New Faves...

laughterandlemondrop

Tiny Christmas villages are one of the holiday’s decorating mainstays.

Nicknamed putz houses, a German word that translates loosely to “putter around” (’cause that’s what you do, putz around with the trinkets until they’re just how you want them), the tradition began with wooden houses or house-shaped candy boxes from Germany.

But with the introduction of holiday string lights came a new kind of putz house, straight from Japan (where much of America’s Christmas décor production shifted after WWI).

In the late 1920s, Japanese designers created simple cardboard houses with holes in the bottom for the lights to go through, illuminating the houses’ cellophane windows.

Putz house proliferation, at least in Japan, died out when WWII began, reducing the collectibles’ prime period to just about 10 years.

Gardening @ Graystone Lane...

Jalapeno peppers

My first summer at Graystone Lane is proving most fruitful...

My daughter, BriAnna has planted red and yellow cherry tomatoes and an assortment of peppers and herbs in our whiskey barrels. This is the start of our plan to have a "potager" outside the mudroom entrance to our house.

This a major endeavor for me...a beginner gardener.

Besides growing vegetables and herbs for our dinner table, I am going to slowly add lavender plants...yes, I dream of having a small lavender farm.

I've only attempted growing lavender in pots...just a few pots...with limited success. Now, I am determined to be successful in my quest to have a lavender farm...just a small one. This is one of the reasons I love Graystone Lane with it's 2.5 acres of useable land. It will be dreamy to have dried lavender and other flowers hanging in the loft drying amongst my vintage found objects (selling on my Etsy site).

I'll keep you posted on my efforts. Until next time...

Enjoy the Day!

Happy Sunday!

Gorgeous warm weather this Sunday at Graystone Lane.
I'm loving these heirloom tomatoes and will incorporate these beauties and more veges in our "potager". Until then, we will enjoy our various peppers, basil, chives, and cherry tomatoes soon to be harvested.

aaahhh...

SUMMER BLISS!

It's The Weekend...

The weather is GLORIOUS today! It just doesn't seem right to hang out indoors and let the sunshine go to waste. It's my girl's last weekend in J-town before returning to Portland to prepare for grad school.

So, we are taking advantage of the warm weather and planting a couple of tomato plants, three types of peppers, and a variety of herbs in our whiskey barrels. Keeping our fingers crossed that when she returns for another visit in August that we will be rewarded with the fruits of our labors.

I may also plant some flowers for a bit of color in the garden...

Have a wonderful weekend...

Taming that Virginia Creeper...

The garage and loft building needed to have the overgrown Virginia Creeper vine trimmed away from under the eaves and windows.

It was quite a production...

Aaahhh...let the light shine through!

Chris Yoder and crew were professional and friendly.

Viola...what a difference!

Now, I think we can maintain it throughout the summer months.

Enjoy the Day!
